Parent functions are the simplest form of a given family of functions. A family of functions is a group of functions that share the same highest degree and, consequently, the same shape for their graphs.

2.3 Functions and Characteristics

A function is a relation in which each possible input value leads to exactly one output value. We say “the output is a function of the input.” The input values make up the domain, and the output values make up the range.
